We try some foods and don't choose others. What is this preference based on? Let's take a look at other creatures.


Elephants don't eat several plants and their leaves and cows choose the grass they eat. Monkeys spit out bitter nuts and most carnivores avoid rotting carcasses. In humans there is a gag reflex. These reflexes and behaviors which have emerged from evolution have helped us survive in the past.


Many bitter or spicy foods that creatures avoid contain alkaline substances which can be found in many toxins in arthropods, micro-organisms, snakes, etc. So are our preferences based upon the evolutionary protective reflexes?
