Imagine an embryo in his or her mother's body. Believe it or not, all of us in that period of time are fed by nutrients passed on through the mother's blood stream. Many things are allowed to pass through from the mother to the baby's blood, and the baby cannot choose to filter it based on good or bad. The fetus's whole life in limited his/her mother's uterus and he/she does not know any better.
