According to a theory, the world is expanding and will continue its expansion until it reaches thermodynamic death, a state where all order has turned into disorder. This suggests that materials tend to maximize their entropy through their reactions.

On the other hand, materials tend to have the lowest free energy and the highest potential energy through their reactions. There is a balance between energy and entropy gradients in each reaction. Energy excites molecules to give them speed which lead to collisions which advance the reaction.

Reactions happen due to the interaction between the energy and entropy.
